Going For The Yellow: Cycling The Alps And Viewing The Tour De France - July 15 thru July 21, 2013

View Map
Mont-Saint-Michel will be within sight from beginning to end

Pointe du Grouin ranks high on our list of not-to-miss stops
This one-of-a-kind tour may as well be called as a biker’s fantasy. For five days you’ll follow the final stages of France’s most famous cycling race from the saddle of your own bike as you weave through the famed Alps. You’ll pedal many of the same hills as the professional Tour de France cyclists and passing breath-taking alpine meadows framed by towering,snow-kissed peaks.
This tour is semi-guided: You’ll pedal at your own pace while we handle the logistics –maps, lodging, shuttling luggage, and bikes (as needed). But unlike self-guided tours, our guides stay at your hotels (or nearby) and you’ll have a support vehicle on call during the most difficult days (yes, you can bail out if the route becomes too challenging)!
Because our office is located near here, we have years of local experience and the knowledge to create the most fulfilling cycling experience you can imagine. Come watch the Tour de France as you ride some of its mythic climbs under your own power:

  • - Telegraphe (1,566 m or 5,135 ft.)
  • - Galibier (2,645 m or 8,680 ft.)
  • - Alpe d’Huez (1,860 m or 6,100 ft)
  • - Col de Sarenne (1,999 m or 6,560 ft.)
  • - Glandon/Croix-de-Fer (2,067 m or 6,780 ft.)
  • - Madeleine (1,993 m or 6,540 ft.)
  • - Semnoz (1,699 m or 5,575 ft.)

Itinerary
Monday, July 15th: Arrive in Geneva – Transfer to your hotel – Rest day for the pros.

Arrive at leisure at your 3-star hotel in the center of Geneva After check-in, you’ll meet your guides and mechanics for bike-fitting (if you choose to rent from us) and receive last-minute tuning (if you bring your own bike). Before dinner at a nearby restaurant, we’ll go over the next few days’ itinerary and provide all the equipment you’ll need (GPS and kit).
Tuesday, July 16th: Transfer to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne – Ride Telegraphe, Galibier and Alpe
d’Huez. Pro stage is “Vaison-la-Romaine – Gap. ”

After transfer, you’ll be transferred to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne (a 2 ½ hour drive) where we’ll unload the bikes. Today’s ride will carry you over the legendary climbs of Telegraphe and Galibier before plunging to the Valley to tackle the most mythic climbs of all: the 21-hairpin climb at Alpe d’Huez. Your hotel is located near Alpe d’Huez in a key location. Dinner will take place in a nearby restaurant.
Total mileage for today’s ride: 110 km (68 miles) with 4,000 meters (13,000 ft.) of climbing.
Wednesday, July 17th: Self-guided ride around Alpe d’Huez – Pro stage is “Embrun Chorges”

As part of your kit, you’ll be offered a few ride options. One of them will take you over the “Col de Sarenne,” the same one the pros will ride the day after you do. Be assured that with the thousands of campervans along the way and the fans already in place for tomorrow’s stage, you’ll get a true sense of what it’s like to ride a stage in the Tour! Dinner is at leisure.
Total mileage for our recommended loop: 50 km (31 miles) with 1,700 meters (5,580 ft.) of climbing.
Thursday, July 18th: Tour viewing in Alpe d’Huez – Ride to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne. Pro-stage is
“Gap – Alpe d’Huez.”

There’s nothing like a finish in Alpe d’Huez—and you’ll be here to experience it! We’ll give you recommendations and advice on the best viewing spots. Today, you’ll see the Tour not just once, but twice! For the first time in the Tour history, riders will climb Alpe d’Huez twice! Afterward, you’ll ride over the mythic climb of Croix-de-Fer . Gravity will carry you to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne where your hotel is located. We expect to arrive in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne about 8:00 pm, just in time for dinner. Note: Our logistics are such that you won’t be stuck in traffic while descending Alpe d’Huez. (Remember, we’re the locals—and experienced!).
Total mileage: 59 km (37 miles) with 2,400 meters (7,875 ft.) of climbing.
Friday, July 19th: Ride to Annecy. Tour viewing at the top of Madeleine. Pro-stage is “Bourg
d’Oisans to Le Grand Bornand”

Today’s ride carries you over one of the most legendary passes of the Tour: the Col de la Madeleine. This is our recommended viewing spot. Gravity will take you down to the valley, a few kilometers from Albertville. The ride from Albertville to Annecy—where your hotel is located—is enjoyed on a traffic-free bikeway. Dinner will take place in Annecy.
Total mileage: 120 km (75 miles) with 2,760 meters (9,050 ft.) of climbing.
Saturday, July 20th: Suggested ride. Tour viewing possible in several spots. Pro-stage is
“Annecy – Semnoz.”

Our kit includes several ride options. Our recommendation is to ride to the top of the Semnoz where you can view the finish of the penultimate stage of the Tour (and most likely, a crucial one!). A close second is watching the start of the stage, a daily ceremonial that usually isn’t too crowded and allow fans to get close to their champions. Dinner takes place in Annecy.
Total mileage for our recommended ride: 42 km (26 miles) with 1,245 meters (4.080 ft.) of climbing.
Sunday, July 21st: Transfer to Geneva

We’ll operate one transfer (one only!) to Geneva. For those wishing to travel to Paris, this can be done by train from Annecy.
