A Short Escape from Avignon to Arles — 2 nights/3 days

View Map
You will be riding on quiet roads through the Alpilles area of Provence   This shorter version of our Alpilles Tour will allow you to marvel at some of Provence's best-known sites.

This trip is perfect for travelers who would like to give biking a try without necessarily committing to a week-long bicycle vacation. It is also an ideal short escape for sun-deprived city dwellers! Avignon is a mere hop away from major European cities. You may read about ways to access Avignon on our blog.

Our loop will take you around the Alpilles on very quiet roads. You'll bike through some of France's prettiest villages, such as Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Les-Baux-de-Provence, Fontvieille, Eygalières, Maussane les Alpilles, Tarascon, and Arles.

If that’s not enough inspiration, we suggest reading a 3-page article in the New York Times detailing the reasons this tour is so special.

One of the highlights of this cycling tour is the village of Les Baux de Provence
Day 1 (any day except Sunday): Avignon — Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (20 km/12 miles, 75 meters/250 ft of climbing)

Meet with our local representative bright and early to begin your cycling tour! Your short ride will lead you to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, a sunny town made famous by Vincent van Gogh’s painting of a café.
Day 2: Saint-Rémy-de-Provence — Arles (Short Option: 43 km/27 miles, 370 meters/1,215 ft of climbing; Long Option via Les Baux: 51 km/32 miles, 530 meters/1,735 ft of climbing)

On both easy trails and small roads, you'll be biking through gorgeous scenery! Ride along the foot of the mountain range, pass vast fields of olive trees, and cycle through vineyards. You can stop for a wine tasting, if you choose! You may also opt to take a detour on a longer route option up to the hilltop town of Les-Baux-de-Provence. It’s a bit of a climb, as you’ll note in the route profile below! Your destination is Arles, a city whose amalgam of historic sites dating from the Roman era earns it its UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
Day 3: Arles — Avignon and Departure (53 km/33 miles, 165 meters/545 ft of climbing)

Leaving Arles behind, you'll bike through Fontvieille, where Alphonse Daudet's windmill is located. Continue on to Tarascon and its castle, one of France's best-kept medieval fortresses. Tarascon is home to Souleiado, a Provencal fabric maker whose patterns bring joy to any home. After that, begin your return trip to Avignon. Riders who wish to visit the Frigolet Abbey and Barbentane may do so by opting for the longer route that will take them through "La Montagnette" (the small mountain).
